Objetivo general de la materia: Dar una introducción a las celdas de combustible y sistemas de celdas de combustible.

Temas y subtemas del curso: 1. Introduction (8hrs)
Hydrogen fuel cells - basic principles,
Fuel cell types, efficiency and efficiency limits
Operational fuel cell voltages - terminology, fuel cell irreversibility, activation losses, ohmic losses, mass transportation or concentration losses, combining the irreversibilities, charge double layer distinguishing irreversibilities.

2. Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel cells (8 Hrs)
Proton exchange membrane fuel cells:-
Overview
Working
Electrodes and structure
Water management
Cooling and air supply
Construction methods
Operating pressure
Reactant composition, example systems

3. Different types of fuel cells (9 Hrs)
Alkaline electrolyte fuel cells: -types, electrodes.
Medium and high temperature fuel cells:-
Construction, working and limits of PAFC, MCFC, SOFC.

4. Fuels for fuel cells (9 Hrs)

Fueling fuel cells:- fossil fuels-
Petroleum, petroleum in mixtures -tar sands, oil shales,
Gas hydrates, LPG, coal, coal gases, natural gases.
Bio fuels, steam reforming, hydrogen generation by pyrolysis or thermal cracking. Methonal reforming, methonal CPO/air to thermal reforming - gasoline reforming. Hydrogen storage - compressed gas, liquid, metal hydride, alkali metal hydrides, comparison.

5. Applications (6 hrs)

Stationary applications
Mobile applications
Natural gas fed PEMFC and PAFC
Delivering fuel cell power: - DC regulation and voltage conversion - switching devices, switching regulators.
Invertors - single and three phase, regulator issues and tariffs, power factor correction, fuel cell/battery hybrid system

2. Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel cells
Understanding the concept of the PEM fuel cells
Fabrication and working of the PEM fuel cells
Design considerations, various restrictions and limitations in the functioning of PEM fuel cells, specifically in the membrane, catalysis, bipolar plates, water management etc.

3. Different types of fuel cells
Various types of fuel cells based on the electrolyte
Working and the components involved in various types of fuel cells
Limitations, intricacies and applications of various fuel cells

4. Fuels for fuel cells
Introduction to various fuels used in different fuel cells
Generation and storage of hydrogen by various techniques
Different media of storage of fuels
Limitations of fuel storage

5. Applications
Various applications of fuel cells in domestic and industries
Applications of different types of fuel cells in specific areas
Fuel cells as applied in the day to day life like houses through invertors along with the existing facilities
